My Office: “Before & In Progress”

Tomorrow is the day I start writing my comprehensive exams, so I thought it fitting to show you the room to which I will be chained for the next six weeks: my office.  Although in need of some brightening up and more artwork, I’ve tried to make my office un-office-y by using more furniture and items you’d see in “living spaces”.  We still have work to do, but I have some great ideas in mind.

“Before”

Yes, my monitor and printer are HUGE.  I can’t hide that and it is way too inconvenient to cover them up or move them elsewhere.  What is funny is I actually need a new desk lamp because the monitor totally eclipses it.  I’ve been searching for a great vintage floor lamp. To compensate for that “office-y-ness,” instead of using a traditional office desk, my hubby and I made a desk for me using an old treadle sewing machine base.  My friend Ashley and her hubby created a similar one!

I use this hand painted Bulgarian vase for my pens
(It was $1, at a yard sale. Sweet)

Vintage chair and table
My own artwork

Handmade pillows

The same grandpa who made our headboard (see here & here) made this sculpture and the one hanging on the wall above my desk for me.

The area below needs some work.  We’re going to turn it into an extension of the room, instead of a closet.  I’m going to change out the handles on the filing cabinet and plan to create a huge magnetic chalk board with a colourful, vintage frame.

So, it is a work in progress, but it sure isn’t the dumping ground it was for the old home owners.

Wish me luck on my exams!

That looks great!! I really want to make a kitchen table with an iron sewing table base too! 🙂 Do you have a tutorial on that one?

What a great desk! And are you saying that there's a grandpa who's a painter AND a grandpa who's a sculptor? That would be waaaaaaaay unfair!!! 🙂

My grandpa is the (retired) sculptor – he used to have his own gallery in Toronto, but worked as a welder. Hubby's grandpa is the (still active) painter. We are super lucky to have such talented family members.
