A Baking Soda Solution

There certainly are many uses for baking soda and I've jumped on the "cleaning with baking soda" bandwagon.  It really does a better job than some of the super caustic, bony hand cleaning products out there (scrubbing bubbles, I'm looking at you).  Plus, I buy it in cases at Costco, so its super cheap.  What has bugged me though, is that I can only buy it in boxes:

And the box always got soggy while I was cleaning (I clean & bathe like a duck - I get water everywhere).  So, I had a lightbulb moment and started using an empty (giant) spice container:

The holes are perfect and now I can sprinkle on the amount I need.  Yay - I love something (anything!) that makes cleaning the townhouse a little easier.

Just wanted to share, in case anyone else has had similar problems.  If you don't have a large spice container (again, Costco), I think any jar could be retrofitted by punching some holes in the lid.

Do you have any nifty cleaning tips?

  1. I hadn't thought about Bar Keepers Friend till I saw a post about it the other day, so I bought some, and now it's MY new best friend. And there's still nothing more effective than a piece of newspaper to clean a mirror. Much better than paper towel or a cloth.

  2. I have heard about the newspaper trick but have never tried it. Sounds counter-intuitive but I think I might give it a go one of these days. We have a note on our mailbox asking not to have the free newspaper that goes around my city, but sometimes they deliver anyway. Next time, I'll clean with it!

  3. try mixing it with vineagar - for that extra fizzy-goodness clean!

  4. Awhile ago I did the ole vinegar and baking soda mix for cleaning the kitchen sink drain and it worked wonders on unclogging a clog!

  5. Random fact... Our bi-carb (Australian name for the same product!) comes in a container with that exact style of lid!

  6. I'm jealous, Rosie - you're all set to shake and clean (or cook). Mine originally came in a box that got all soggy . . .

You've made my day - I love hearing from you! I approve comments only to keep out the spam, so don't worry if your comment doesn't pop up right away.
