Inspiration: Yellow & Grey Rooms

This is the story of how I (sometimes) come to like the things I like: my mom starts to like it.  At first, I'm ambivalent.  Then I start to see how the thing (colour palette, furniture item, etc.) works for her.  Then I keep my eye out for it, for her.  I endure it.  Then I snag a couple pieces for either of us.  Then I start to like it, slightly.  Then I become obsessed and barely remember not liking it.  This has happened with:
  • Mid-century design
  • Teak (the oiling, the denting - I wasn't always a fan)
  • Natural fibres for clothing (I was into polyester, at first - wash & wear, baby)
  • Cashmere (now I can't wear my old - itchy - wool sweaters)
  • White walls (I once painted mine kermit green!)
  • The eyeliner flick
  • The monkey song
And now, with the stellar combination of yellow and grey.  I know, I know, it has been done to death but, thanks to mom, I'm hooked.  Just look at how many inspiration pics I've amassed:

  1. Me too!! But is there a final step to that cycle for you?? There is for me. It's called being annoyed for liking what my mom likes and then having to find my own stuff again. Yellow and grey was BIG this year. I tried to avoid it, but I ended up with grey bedding and bath ensembles via ikea. *sigh*

  2. No! It has not been done to death! It's up to us to keep it alive!

  3. Stephanie: The final step in the cycle is that I win (or we tie). I have more mid-century teak, I stayed more committed to natural fibres, I know all the words to the monkey song. Eventually I assume responsibility for liking said thing so fully, I almost forget it wasn't my idea. I become the official cheerleader but we share the passion. Sometimes interest travels the other way, too. I got my mom out of "mom-pants" and now she looks more hip and stylish than me.

  4. My mother had absolutely no decorating skills, so I never picked up on anything from her. I tend to be the "dominant decorator" in the family these days, although my daughter has a mind of her own and refuses to be budged in some areas. She has completely taken over as arbiter of musical taste though and is always getting me hooked on bands.

  5. Just love your gallery of inspiration pics, especially the Habitually Chic bedroom with the hits of moss green...gorgeous. You inspire me all the time, like a ray of yellow sunshine on a grey and cloudy day, making everything brighter and happier:)

  6. Thanks Mom. I heart you. And I just noticed the time stamp - so weird that I logged into my blog the same time you did. See? Always copying you.

  8. The yellow & grey definitely pulls you in, doesn't it? And it is so flexible - I snagged photos with romantic rooms, eclectic rooms, mod rooms . . .
