New DIY Art For Bathroom

Inspired by the yellow & grey rooms I have been ogling (see here for bathrooms and here for other rooms), I painted some artwork for the main bathroom this weekend!  I LOVE our bathroom (if you check out the before, here, you will see why) but it needed some colour.  The rest of the townhouse has so many colourful pops of artwork – even the guest half bathroom has a new DIY painting – that this bathroom looked out of place.  After a botched attempt (that I promise to blog about soon) I created a piece that Hubby I think looks great:

I love that you can see it so clearly in the mirror.  It adds a visible splash of colour, regardless of your vantage point.

Even in our windowless bathroom, with the lights turned off, the yellow painting adds a spark of brightness.

I painted the edges of the canvas the same shade of yellow featured prominently in the painting for a seamless look.  Less expensive than framing, painting the edges offers a more finished look.

From the blooper reel: check out the super unrolled toilet paper.  Oops.

It is really beautiful! Somewhat reminds me of Jen's of Made by Girl.. and she is good so that's a compliment! Your bathroom is so calm and serene:)

Wow, Jane! That IS a huge compliment. Thanks! I have been playing around, a lot, with different compositions and colours – trying to step outside my comfort zone.

Looks fantastic! I agree that painting the sides makes for almost instantaneous…and affordable…art for your walls. That's perfect for someone impatient like me. I hate sending things to the framer and having to wait to get it back. I want it on the wall as soon as I paint the last stroke. I think that's a great look for a modern home, and I'm especially becoming a fan of the deep profile canvases.

I agree, Dana! I am way too eager to wait for framing. Sometimes I fall out of love with my own work really quickly. Thanks Dora & Shannon! And Dora, the shower curtain is by Marimekko.

Love that yellow painting! You just have to do a post on it! Or did I miss it? I have a blank canvas that needs some love, but I am too nervous to start anything. Yours looks beautiful.

I love your new painting: the size, the composition, the brushwork and the beautiful colours ……just perfect. Where are your little ducks? They're missing all the fun. Sad little ducks 🙁

Hi Beatrice,Thanks! This is the only post about this painting. It is difficult for me to do a "how-to" about art (although I have a few on the DIY projects page) because I just move the brush around and sometimes the result is a little unintended. I have another painting in the works and will try to photograph the development and will post a bit of info about how this painting came to be, soon.

Hi Mom, er, Susie. Thanks!! You know where I get the artistic gene from!! The little ducks are there – they live on the toilet tank (ie. out of the way and not in a high-hairspray-zone. You should come visit to see the painting in real life . . .

The first thing I thought was that it looked like Jen's from Made by Girl too!! I think this looks absolutely amazing. I am loving the gray and yellow as well and I am actually thinking of re-doing my living room with this color palate.

I love this yellow painting – it might be my FAV piece of art in your house! I love the shape of the canvas for that space. It's just perfect!
