I’m [Kitchen] Tweaking

When I hung the Hungarian embroidery in the hall, did anyone wonder where the photograph that was there went?  You might have spotted my not-earth-shattering change in my new Pyrex post.  I did a switch-eroo & removed the DIY’d painting from the kitchen (its “hanging out” downstairs now) & hung the photograph in its place:

Now

Before

I liked my painting but I just wasn’t liking it there.  I also de-cluttered and stream-lined the kitchen a bit.  I had itty-bitty things everywhere and I’ve removed some & re-arranged others for a simpler, cleaner and more usable space.  The abstract, although I loved it, was just too much pattern – the circles, the houndstooth, the pattern of the floor tile, the herringbone back splash, the Marimekko tea towel – it was just too much with no cohesion.  With the new chalkboard knife block, a trimmed down colour palette and fewer patterns, the space looks much better.

Does anyone else feel like sometimes a little, seemingly insignificant change feels more momentous than it really is?  This change just “clicked” for me.  Weird, right?

I do agree that the black works really well with the floor and your chair fabric. Can I just tell you that I am crazy about your table and chairs. Love the teak and the style of the chairs is fantastic!!

Yes! I did just that a few weeks ago. I completely de-cluttered my dinning room and now whenever I walk in (even a few weeks later) I feel like it's so much fresher and airier in there. It's funny because I threw out a bunch of things I didn't really need and then when I left the apartment my entire neighborhood was having a yard sale (great-glebe style). Needless to say I didn't feel like buying anything that would just clutter up my newly freshened room! Emiliewww.liveeatsmile.blogspot.com

So happy to hear I'm not the only one who swoons over small changes because those are sometimes the best (and cheapest!) kind. For those who commented on the chairs/table, both are vintage. The chairs were sold with the 1950s dining table in the dining room. We recovered them in black & white houndstooth (my favorite!) The table was a separate classified ad purchase and was actually harmed in the making of this post. More on that later!

Hi Ashlee (house no. 2). Thanks!!No plans to paint. I already stripped and re-varnished them. I wanted to paint them, but my hubby LOVES the natural wood (as did every other man that has seen the kitchen – odd) and I wanted him to feel at home in our home. So I painstakingly stripped with the stingy-est chemical stripper and then applied fresh varnish so they at least look new.
