My Paper Mache AND Holiday Wrapping Fails

Can't win 'em all.

First of all, thank you for being such lovely and supportive readers. I look forward to each and every comment and email. In light of all the positive feedback about things like my hodge:podge interview and Artful Ikea Expedit Hack (featured on Design*Sponge and Ikea Hacker), I thought I'd post two fails from this week to show you that I have DIY flops, too.

1. Paper Maché Fail

I was going for something like these:

Etsy - etco

Etsy - One Click Gallery

Etsy - Maus Home and Vintage

But here's mine:

The bigger ones split when I tried to take them off the mold.  Boo.  Two delightful evenings spent elbow deep in paste, wasted.

2. Artful Wrapping Fail

Undeterred by my flop, I used the rest of the newspaper I accumulated to wrap a gift for my wee little cousins.  I don't celebrate Christmas, but I can't not give a gift to a child who does.  That's like kicking a kitten.  But I refuse to splurge on holiday wrap so, on a "creative" roll, I did this:

I was going for shabby chic.  Apparently I don't do that look very well.  Even the ribbon can't hide the fact it looks like a toddler wrapped this.

Shameful, when I could have easily done something pretty, like this:

Mini Eco

Meh.  Someone, if not my family (it's unlikely they will find this funny) then their mail carrier, will get a giggle from this.

  1. It's funny you posted this, I'm working on a DIY fail post as well. I painted a lamp shade. It's terrible :) We get our paper at the dollar store. I'm terrible at wrapping. And by the time I need to wrap the presents I'm so Christmas'ed out that I don't want to add anything special to it. I hope you try to bowl again. :)

  2. Hi Faith, I can't wait to see your flop. I kind of like flops - they happen, so I want to know about them. Makes it easier to laugh, knowing it's not uncommon and doesn't make me a bad DIY'er.

  3. Ha! It is nice to see some DIY failures once in a while. We know we all have them but rarely get to see other people's! Your "kicking a kitten" comment made me chuckle. We have been known to use that analogy around here sometimes swapping puppy for kitten.

  4. I've been eyeing those gold inside, white outside bowls too!...I must try my hand at them one day soon. :) It's frustrating, but humbling at the same time, when something doesn't turn out the way you want. Try it again I suppose. :)

Wrapping paper- it's the thought that counts and very kind of you to give to someone that needs, at this time of year. Good for you :)

  5. Gotta love the flops. They make much funnier stories when you're sitting around having a glass of wine with friends. :)

  6. I think it looks cute! I wanted to wrap in newspaper this year, but I know my family would be appalled... alas!

  7. Flops are fun! When they're over. :) I love the idea of using newspaper for wrapping. Maybe certain papers with lots of small print (as opposed to numbers and large headlines, too?) would look nice? :)

  8. I love your honesty in posting your 'fails'. At least they can give you a good laugh once you've had a couple of days to get over it. :) haha

  9. Glad everyone enjoyed. I hesitate posting flops sometimes, but I really, really like blogs for their honesty. So I figure I have to walk the walk.

Ashley & Erin - thanks for your encouragement. I think smaller print paper has potential. I just think it needs to be applied more neatly and not encased in a thousand layers of poorly applied packing tape. Maybe I was on the right track? I'm sure I'll take another stab at it next year, lol.

  10. It is really funny you posted this, because I wanted to make the gold ones as well. You win some, you lose some. You should have seen my dyed sofa cover. Disaster. I was too embarrassed to post it. Hope you try it again.

You've made my day - I love hearing from you! I approve comments only to keep out the spam, so don't worry if your comment doesn't pop up right away.
