Box Up Those Feelings

The blogosphere is buzzing with storage and organizational ideas, which is making me feel exceptionally deficient because this is what my house looks like right now (this is just a sliver of the mess):

I have tackled one teeny tiny project, though (and I'm hoping it will result in a snowball effect).

Hubby leaves me the sweetest notes and I find them in random places.  When I went to Hungary for a month he hid notes in my glasses case, my toiletries case - everywhere, and they would flutter out of a hiding spot when I needed them most.  I have saved all of these notes, along with a whack of other sentimental things like ticket stubs from movies we've seen.  But I chose the ugliest box to store them in:

A recent note from Hubby

Finally, I decided I should spring for something prettier.  We've been together for more than 10 years and married for 3 years, so I figured I could invest $14.99 in a pretty box to store these mementos.

I bought the box at HomeSense and I could have made one (like the fabric covered box we used to collect cards at our wedding) . . .

I covered a printer paper box with fabric & ribbon for our wedding.

. . . but the store-bought one has a zipper and the fabric is just so pretty.  Plus I had a gift card.

Albeit, this project was small.  It took only a few minutes to sort through the contents and transfer them to the new box, but I figure I have to start somewhere.  This weekend I will be working on the larger mess.  Check back next week to see how I deal with and organize the mess (there's my motivation).  I promise to have a couple neat ideas.  More importantly, you won't believe what I'm planning on storing in the guest room closet.  I'll give you a hint: it weighs 200 pounds!!!

P.S. When do you decide to BIY (buy it yourself) as opposed to DIY?

  1. ha! When I first read you're putting something that weighs 200lbs in your guest room closet, the first thing that popped to mind was... your husband! lol I'm assuming that's NOT it!

    1. Hahaha!! I WISH he weighed 200 lbs, then it wouldn't have been a constant battle to weigh less than him these last 10 years.

No, he would not enjoy living in the guest bedroom closet because there would be no computer access.

But thanks for the giggle ;)

  2. if the price is right I will normally buy over DIYing. I enjoy doing things myself, but sometimes you can't beat the price of buying it pre made. I will be checking back :)

  3. I love the fabric on the new box. So pretty :)

  4. I love the fabric on the new box!!! I wouldn't have been able to resist that either.

  5. Hum, that reminds me that my "memories" box is busting at the seams. I may have to take a peak at home sense!

DIY is always time dependent! If I'm home for an entire weekend with no big plans (like this weekend!) I usually choose to DIY over BIY.

  6. that is a great box and I think it will keep your things much better than a cardboard box.
Depending on the look I am going for, I will buy if I want fresh and modern. I will DIY if I want antique or homemade cozier feel.

Have fun organizing I love to organize :)

  7. OK first, he is totally sweet! Love that he takes the time to do this for you. Secondly, you mentioned this was just a small step in organizing, but if you do a little every day, it will be done no time. As for when I DIY or not, it comes down to time (whether I have it) and skill (if I am pretty confident I can do it). There have been times when I've broken one of these two rules and it resulted in a total waste of my money when I had to pay someone to finish it for me! M.

  8. I LOVE the fabric on your new box... what a great use of your gift card :-)

  9. Honestly, if I had all the money in the world, I think I would always BIY over DIY. I know that's not a popular opinion, but I'd be a liar if I said otherwise!

    1. Love your honesty, Brandy! If money were no option, I'd live differently too. I'd still DIY, but not as excessively I think . . .

  10. I love it, your husband sounds like such a sweetheart!
