Why I Blog + Warm Fuzzies

Most of my friends outside of blog-land are not really into decorating or DIY.  Hubby & I have only lived in Ottawa a few years and we were just happy to make friends so quickly.  I didn't do a survey and find out if they were crafty first.  Don't get me wrong, we have fabulous, fabulous friends and I feel so lucky to have such wonderful people in my life.  But since I started this blog, it has felt amazing to connect with people who will notice the small tweak to the curtains, laugh about the hilarious new DIY tablecloth and say they want to try my Ikea Expedit Hack.  When a reader tells me they tried my billy button tutorial and it worked, I swear, it's the highlight of my day.

I also appreciate that blogging keeps me accountable.  It pushes me to finish projects, plus it gives me the courage to try new things I'd only been thinking about, because I know I have you all cheering me on, waiting to see the reveal.  You think I'm the slowest DIY'er ever?  Imagine me with no one to report to!  More than that, my readers blog-friends also inspire me: blogging about their own DIY successes or emailing me with interesting questions or wonderful ideas.

I just wanted to take a moment and thank you all for stopping by the townhouse, and chiming in.  I have no visions of grandeur, because I don't think I will have the good fortune to do this professionally (although that would be swell).  I'm just excited to finally know people (other than my Hubs) interested in DIY and budget decorating!  It makes me smile every day.

That's why it tickles me when other, much more talented, bloggers share my projects with their readers.  I get to meet more blog-friends!  So thanks to Cassity, from Remodelaholic and Roeshel, from DIY Showoff, for featuring my DIY play kitchen on their blogs this past week (click here to see the Remodelaholic feature and click here to see the kitchen on the DIY Showoff).

If you missed my original play kitchen reveal, take a look at the post by clicking here.

And, if you saw my DIY play kitchen and said, "Tanya! I don't have time to make a flippin' play kitchen but now I don't want a cheap, plastic one either," I have a cute BIY (buy-it-yourself) option from Costco.  This set is $189.99.  I'm still pretty excited mine was less than $35.00, but this is two pieces and darn, is it cute.

This is my favorite part - read the highlighted line in the description.  For some reason it makes me chuckle.  I imagine a kid in the background whining, "Mom, Dad, when do I get a turn?"

This is NOT a sponsored post.  I just heart Costco and want this play kitchen as an objet d'art!

P.S. One of the ways I try to thank you all for being such cool friends is by hosting giveaways.  I don't get paid or perked, the bonus is 100% for you!  And you don't need a blogger account - you can just use the comment form and enter your name (but be sure to include your email address or check back to see the winner announced).

I have a giveaway going on right now, so check it out here, and stay tuned because I have three more in the works!

  2. Tanya! You're completely right! That is another one of the reasons I love blogging. My friends in real life are not into DIY or home improvement or decorating at all. So funny that we were thinking along the same lines (my post was written over the weekend too). Well, not surprising, right? Great minds think (and DIY) alike! I'm so glad we've 'met' and always look forward to 'seeing' you! :)

    1. Well, I guess we have a mission: force the people in our lives to start DIY'ing ;)

I'm also so happy that we "met" and I look forward to your posts and am so excited for attention your blog gets (like being featured on YHL!!!) Thanks also for being such a supportive & generous blogger. It means a lot to me that you have said such kind things about my projects.

  3. I was so excited to see you on Remodelaholic! I think we were both featured the same day! YAY! It's thrilling isn't it. I feel the same way sometimes with my friends, like I am probably driving them nuts when they come over, and I want to show them everything we've worked on since they last visited. Like do they really care if I do or do not tuft my ottoman, or add a contrasting piping, but fortunately for me they humor me, and don't tell me to just shut up.
Yeah, I don't want to go on and on, but wanted to let you know I totally relate! Way to go on the features!

    1. Congrats on the feature!! Your wall is gorgeous. I pinned it when you first blogged about it and a million people re-pinned it. It got way more Pinterest love from my Pinterest peeps than my own DIY's, lol.

So happy to hear I'm not the only one forcing my friends to look at the DIY side of life. I'm glad you told me you can relate!!

  4. You totally deserve to have it featured everywhere!
My daughter has been begging me to make her a kitchen since Christmas but I've never seen a DIY one that made me say, " Ok...this, I can do. " Most of the projects I would come across just didn't look tall enough for her ( she's 9 ) or they just looked old fashioned. The moment I opened your post up I called her into the room and asked, " Alli, do you think this one would work for you? "
    " Mommy, that's so pretty! It's perfect! "
Anyways..the point is we now have the microwave stand, I just bought the taps and bowl for the sink and am busy sewing a little apron and matching pot holders for it!
You totally inspired us to get working on this and made, at least one little girl, very happy!

    1. Thanks Lesley, I appreciate that!

I'm so excited your little girl liked it! That's the best review I could get. I hope my little cousin is just as enthused.

It sounds like you are well on your way to making a super awesome play kitchen. Promise to post photos when you're done??? I can't wait to see what you cook up (oh, I'm so punny).

  5. Ottawa, huh? I'm in Bells Corners. Small, small world!

I think your little kitchen deserved the sharing it's been getting. It's a terrific idea, and your execution of the project was perfect!

    1. Thanks!

I'm sure your painting it great, you're being too hard on yourself. Did you see how totally different mine is than the original? Copying a piece identically is hard (probably because we're all such unique people) but borrowing from someone else is a great way to start, get the creative juices flowing. I've mentioned before that sometimes I make a few paintings before I make one I like. I have a basement of rejects. Some are bad. But sometimes I'm too hard on myself.

I still think your is probably lovely, just try to think of it as its own thing, not a copy. If you don't compare it, you might like it more.

Would you consider sending me a photo???? I would LOVE to see!

    1. Thanks, Kimberly. What you wrote means a lot to me.

I hope my cousin thinks of me when she plays with the kitchen. We live far apart and our age gap is SO huge (I'm her mom's age) but I hope to form a relationship with her. I hope handmade gifts help!
