DIY “Dipped” Wood Spoons, Take II

I picked up these wooden utensils for pocket change at Ikea (they’re a lot more “pared back” than this more expensive set, but I don’t have a “before”.  Just picture plain wood utensils).  I intended to use them for the play kitchen Hubs and I DIY’d.  But then I realized how small kid’s hands are (really, really small) and came to my senses.  These would be like lacrosse sticks for my wee little cousins!  I have a real issue remembering what size kids are.  Buying kid’s clothes is a nightmare plus I’m always buying too-advanced books and games.

So the utensils sat, half-finished, in the basement for awhile, until I recently decided to just wrap up the project and use them for myself!  I did the same thing I did for my last set of dipped spoons (which had been grabbed from the drawer as an experiment, not like this squeaky clean brand new set I got to “dip”).

Some folks have used food safe paint and varnish for their dipped spoons, which is a fabulous idea.  The painted part of my other spoons never touches the food, so mine haven’t posed an issue even though I’ve used latex paint and regular varnish.

I’m happy to incorporate some more of the the mint hue I was mooning over.  Plus, look at what an awesome prop the recently made over antique chair is!

A bit of a repeat performance, I know, but I had to share.  Plus, you got a glimpse of my new Pyrex bowl.  I have two of the gooseberries on white – recently thrifted.  I’m missing the other two to make a set . . .

P.S. Don’t forget, these are hand wash only.

Thanks!! I'm pretty smitten with it to, even though I HATED it before. Never ceases to amaze me what paint can do!

It's pretty, isn't it? I've only ever seen the pink before. Hopefully it isn't hard to track down the other two bowls (which I think are black on butter yellow).

LOVE this!! We are actually no joke in the process of finishing something kinda like this…but i love this idea Tanya! It totally adds a colorful touch to a boring wooden spoon! And with the cute spoon on top of the matte black chair makes it even more eye catching 🙂 LOVE IT!!

Very pretty spoons. I just started my very own collection of Pyrex bowls. I thought I had 3 but my husband, whose eyesight is perfect while mine is not, said the most recent acquisition is not Pyrex. Guess I need to bring my glasses to the thrift store next time!

I have also been fooled my Pyrex imitators. But most vintage kitchen ware is good quality, so that bowl might still get put to good use. Can't wait to see your collection grow!!

I love your dipped spoons. I love them the first time you shared them and I still love them now. I have a feeling I will never copy you though, unless, perhaps, I plan to hang some wooden spoons on the wall. (Which, perhaps, could work!) I love my dishwasher! And I hate handwashing wooden spoons. Nevertheless, I do love your dipped spoons.

Ha ha, oh I love me some dishwasher-ing too! Without one, I think Hubs and I would be always arguing over the dishes. I wish I could run them through, but it's bad for wood spoons period. Even before I painted the first set, they were getting dried out and wrecked from the harsh soap. But I love how gentle wood is on the pots and pans so I hate to switch to another material. So I do a lazy job of handwashing these.
