A Closet Makeover

I have to show you what our master bedroom closet looks like right now, because it totally makes me smile:

Bright Closet Interior

It’s a sneaky place to add colour, and I’m loving it.  Originally I was going to leave the bedroom closet completely untouched until we saved up a little cash for new doors and a new closet organizer, but when we took possession of the lakehouse I noticed the mirrored sliding door was cracked – something I’m not sure was cracked during home inspection.

Before: Mirrored Closet Doors

We removed the doors right away because I was paranoid about the crack expanding, shattering and showering me with shards of glass while I slept.  Unrealistic?  Likely.  But enough for me to break out the tools and banish the doors.  But then I was left looking at this:

Before: Cheap Closet Organizer

We figured we might as well go ahead and replace the closet organizer and paint, even if we haven’t even begun to look at new doors yet.  But it wasn’t as simple as that, because when we removed the shelving system our worst fears were confirmed: the hardwood flooring had been installed around them.  This was already pretty evident, but a small part of me hoped I was just looking at it wrong.  I think I just couldn’t wrap my brain around it, because it took more work to do the fitment fussing than it would have to just remove the closet organizer (which was half hanging out of the wall anyway), install the floors properly and hang the shelves back up.

Luckily, the previous owner left a box of unused hardwood flooring in the garage, so Handy Hubby pried out the offending boards and installed new pieces – see this post for his tutorial on that

For all his efforts, the closet colour choice was his: Fiesta Orange, by Glidden

I rolled on three coats of CIL paint and primer in one and, because the
trim has all been painted out white to match the walls, I thought it
would be fun to paint the closet trim orange to match the walls as well,
instead of having a skinny white border running above the floor.

I’d like to hang my vintage Hungarian posters in the bedroom, and I think the orange Hubby picked is an exact match to one.  Fun!  Now I’m shopping for a closet organizer.  And then new closet doors.  Oh, and a light fixture for inside the closet because blech:

Szuka is team-orange too, seeing as her favorite toy is the same hue.

You and I do the exact opposite on closets. I hate painting them so as I'm working through our house I'm painting them all white, regardless of the room colour. That way I never have to paint them again. With that said, I love the pop of orange.

That is a very smart idea!! I've always done the closets white – because my walls are all white – for ease too. This is the first time I've tried something different. Hopefully we won't tire of the colour for a long time. I know Hubby won't – it's his favorite!

I originally wanted a greeny-teal shade but I gave Hubs the paint chip fan deck and he zeroed in on this one. I'm trying to keep things to cool blues and greens but he just loves orange. It's actually such a cheery colour so I can't complain. It will be fun to open the doors and have this greet us in the morning!

I actually like the bright pop of color. I don't think I would have thought about it before, but it's a very nice contrast to the rest of the room.

I've wanted to try bright closets for ages and I'm sold now – they really work with our white walls. Spoiler alert: this isn't the only bright one!!

CANNOT believe they installed the wood around the closet organizer. Seems like too much work to me. It's interesting the things you discover in new spaces, eh? Thanks for taking your readers along your reno journey. Progress looks great!Jordana

Weird, right? I'd understand if the closet fittings were awesome solid wood or custom built but they were really dirty, really crappy, really falling apart melamine ones, at least a decade old and the floors were newer!! Odd.

It looks great! Awesome that you were able to fix the flooring too!

Thanks!! Oh, you have no idea how relieved I am. I had started designed custom shelving to fit back into the stupid gaps but then Hubby found the box of extra boards and what a relief!

I'm on team-orange, too. That looks great- my daughter pinned it for new room inspiration. We saw it on my pinterest page first and I didn't know it was yours until I opened this post : )I like the surprise of a bold colour inside the closet.

That is so beautiful. I love the pop of color it provides and the openness of it. I wish I could go without closet doors because it makes things seem so fresh. But I can't subject people to the mess that is my closet. What kind of doors do you think you'll be looking to get?

I'm not sure what kind of doors will be available to us in Thunder Bay. I don't really want mirrored doors, or bi-fold (no room for them to open), but I did spot a sliding door at Home Depot that has kind of a milky-beach glass look. We just need to save up some cash and hopefully get the closet finished soon.
